Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek (1860-1945) was an Austrian composer and conductor. Born in Vienna, he worked in several German-speaking musical centres and became known for opera, orchestral music and chamber works.

His best-known work is the opera Donna Diana, especially its sparkling overture. He also wrote symphonies, tone poems, songs and other stage works.

Reznicek’s music is colourful, theatrical and often witty, with roots in late Romanticism and a lively sense of orchestral gesture. He could combine seriousness with a light hand.

Though his broader catalogue is seldom heard, the Donna Diana overture has kept his name in concert programmes. It is a bright little calling card from a much larger desk.
