Albert Lortzing (1801-1851) was a German composer, actor and singer, best remembered for his comic operas and singspiels. Born in Berlin, he spent much of his career in the theatre, gaining practical experience from the stage as well as the pit.

His best-known works include Zar und Zimmermann, Der Wildschütz and Undine. These operas combine spoken dialogue, lively ensembles and tuneful vocal writing.

Lortzing’s music is genial, theatrical and clear, with a strong sense of comic timing and character. He wrote for audiences who expected wit, melody and dramatic momentum.

Though less internationally famous than later German opera composers, Lortzing remains an important figure in the native comic tradition. His music has the bustle of backstage life stitched into it.
