Stafford Smith
John Stafford Smith (1750-1836) was an English composer, organist and singer. He is remembered above all for the melody that became The Star-Spangled Banner.
The tune began life as To Anacreon in Heaven, a song associated with a London gentlemen’s club, before later being joined to Francis Scott Key’s words. It eventually became the national anthem of the United States.
