Karl Komzák II (1850-1905) was an Austrian-Bohemian composer and military bandmaster, part of a family of musicians associated with Viennese and central European light music. He was especially known for marches, dances and band pieces.

His most familiar work is Bad’ner Mad’ln, a waltz that became popular in the Austrian light-music repertory. His music appears naturally alongside Strauss family dances and other Viennese concert pieces.

Komzák’s style is tuneful, rhythmically buoyant and designed for immediate public appeal. It belongs to a world of bands, promenades, dance halls and festive civic music.

Though not a central figure beside Johann Strauss II, Komzák was a skilled craftsman of the same musical ecosystem. His music has the polished brass gleam of a bandstand on a bright afternoon.
