Guillaume Du Fay (c.1397-1474) was a Franco-Flemish composer and one of the central musical figures of the early Renaissance. Associated with the Burgundian world as well as Italy and the Low Countries, he helped shape the international style of the fifteenth century.

His works include masses, motets, hymns and chansons. Du Fay’s music stands at a crucial point where medieval inheritance, English influence and new Renaissance clarity begin to meet.

His style combines melodic grace, contrapuntal skill and a growing sensitivity to harmonic sonority. Sacred works such as Nuper rosarum flores show both ceremonial grandeur and precise architectural imagination.

Du Fay’s influence reached across Europe, and later generations inherited much from his handling of mass cycles and vocal texture. He is one of the great hinge figures in Western music, quietly turning the door into a new age.
