Peeter Cornet (c.1575-1633) was a Flemish composer and organist active in the Spanish Netherlands. He served at the Brussels court and belongs to the distinguished northern European keyboard tradition around the turn of the seventeenth century.

Cornet’s surviving music is chiefly for keyboard, including fantasias, toccatas and other organ works. It stands alongside the music of Sweelinck and other Netherlandish masters represented in early keyboard repertory.

His style combines contrapuntal craft with idiomatic keyboard figuration. The music often has a learned surface, but beneath it lies a performer’s understanding of how lines, resonance and movement work under the fingers.

Cornet is a relatively small name in the wider Baroque canon, yet his work is valuable in tracing the path from Renaissance polyphony to the mature keyboard idioms of the seventeenth century. He is one of the quiet engineers of the organ’s golden machinery.
