Carlo Tagliabue (1898-1978) was an Italian baritone, admired especially in Verdi. He sang at La Scala and other major houses, and became one of the distinguished Italian baritones of the mid-twentieth century.

In the Pristine catalogue he appears in Verdi’s La forza del destino with Maria Callas, Richard Tucker, Nicola Rossi-Lemeni and Tullio Serafin.

Tagliabue’s singing was firm, noble and classically proportioned, with the breadth and verbal authority required by Verdi’s great baritone roles. He belonged to a tradition in which line and dignity mattered deeply.

His recordings preserve a serious Verdi artist rather than a merely forceful voice. Tagliabue’s baritone has the old-school virtue of standing upright without shouting about it.
