Albert Sammons (1886-1957) was an English violinist and composer, one of the most admired British string players of the first half of the twentieth century. He is represented in the Pristine catalogue both as performer and as composer.

Sammons wrote and arranged music for violin, including pieces connected with the recital tradition. His own works naturally reflect the needs and instincts of a virtuoso player.

His style is lyrical, idiomatic and grounded in the expressive world of the violin. It belongs less to abstract composition than to the practical art of making the instrument sing persuasively.

Sammons’s chief historical importance remains his playing, especially in Elgar, but his composer tag is a useful reminder that many great performers also carried music back to the desk.
