Lawrence Tibbett (1896-1960) was an American baritone, one of the great singing actors of the Metropolitan Opera and a major figure in American vocal history.

In the Pristine catalogue he appears in Gershwin: The First Recordings, a release documenting early and composer-linked performances around Gershwin’s music.

Tibbett’s singing combined vocal splendour, verbal bite and theatrical command. He was one of the rare artists able to make the gramophone feel like a stage.

His page is essential despite a compact catalogue footprint. Tibbett brings star baritone voltage to the American shelf.
