Leo Sowerby (1895-1968) was an American composer and organist, especially associated with Chicago. He became one of the leading figures in American church and organ music of the twentieth century.

His works include organ pieces, choral music, orchestral scores, chamber music and songs. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his cantata Canticle of the Sun.

Sowerby’s music is tonal, richly crafted and often grounded in sacred or civic musical life. His organ writing reflects both command of the instrument and a strong architectural sense.

Though not a household name outside specialist circles, Sowerby was a major American musical craftsman. His music has the resonance of stone, wood, breath and well-voiced pipes.
