André Kostelanetz (1901-1980) was a Russian-born American conductor and arranger, famous for polished orchestral arrangements of popular and light classical music. Born in Saint Petersburg, he became a major figure in American radio and recording.

Kostelanetz conducted widely for Columbia and helped bring symphonic-style arrangements to a broad public. In the Pristine catalogue he appears in Richard Rodgers repertory.

His style was lush, smooth and highly produced, closer to the radio studio and record player than to the severe concert platform. That was precisely its strength.

Kostelanetz represents an important middle kingdom between classical performance and popular listening. He knew how to make an orchestra gleam under domestic lamplight.
