Amy Beach (1867-1944) was an American composer and pianist, and one of the first American women to achieve major recognition in large-scale classical forms. Born Amy Marcy Cheney in New Hampshire, she was a prodigy as both pianist and composer.

Her catalogue includes the Gaelic Symphony, a piano concerto, chamber music, choral works, songs and piano pieces. Much of her career unfolded within social constraints that limited her public performance after marriage, but she continued to compose with remarkable determination.

Beach’s music is rooted in late Romantic language, with strong melodic lines, rich harmony and an assured command of form. She could write with public grandeur, intimate lyricism or dramatic intensity according to the demands of the work.

Her reputation has grown steadily as neglected American music has been re-examined. Beach now stands not as a historical curiosity, but as a central figure in the formation of an American concert tradition.
