Lange

Gustav Lange (1830-1889) was a German composer and pianist, best remembered for salon pieces that circulated widely in nineteenth-century domestic music-making. His works were particularly associated with the piano and with popular recital repertory.

Lange wrote many short character pieces, of which Blumenlied, or Flower Song, became especially famous. Such pieces often passed into arrangements for other instruments and appeared frequently in early recorded programmes.

His music is lyrical, graceful and designed for immediate charm rather than large-scale argument. It belongs to the cultivated parlour tradition, where melody and elegance mattered most.

Though his name is now modest, Lange’s music helps explain the sound-world in which many historic performers grew up. Small pieces like his could travel further than their titles suggest.
