Wolfgang Sawallisch was a German conductor and pianist, one of the major conductors of the post-war period. He was especially associated with opera, German repertory and the Bavarian State Opera.

In the Pristine catalogue he appears conducting Orff’s Carmina Burana with Cologne radio forces in 1956.

Sawallisch’s conducting brought clarity, discipline and theatrical energy to repertory that depends on rhythmic bite and choral force.

His page is justified by stature and catalogue context. Sawallisch gives the Orff shelf a clean German podium line with sparks in the percussion.
