Henk Badings (1907-1987) was a Dutch composer whose career combined traditional craft with a striking interest in new sonorities and technology. Born in the Dutch East Indies and raised in the Netherlands, he first trained as a mining engineer before turning fully to music.

Badings wrote prolifically in many genres, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, choral works and opera. He was also one of the early European composers to explore electronic music, microtonality and unusual tuning systems.

His musical language ranges from firm contrapuntal construction to bold harmonic and timbral experiment. Though often rooted in classical forms, his work has a restless curiosity that places him within the broader modernist search for new resources.

Badings remains a complex figure in Dutch musical history, not least because of controversy surrounding his wartime appointments. Yet his best music shows a powerful intelligence, wide technical command and a distinctive ear for colour.
