Fritz Stiedry (1883-1968) was an Austrian conductor, associated with Mahler’s circle, German opera and later the Metropolitan Opera. He worked in Europe and the United States after leaving Nazi Germany.

In the Pristine catalogue he appears in Wagner’s Parsifal from the Metropolitan Opera with Astrid Varnay, Hans Hotter and George London.

Stiedry’s conducting was serious, experienced and rooted in the German theatre tradition. Wagner’s long spans require exactly that mixture of patience, structure and stage sense.
