Paul Creston (1906-1985) was an American composer whose music is known for rhythmic vitality, clear structure and strong melodic profile. Born Giuseppe Guttoveggio in New York, he was largely self-taught as a composer and developed an individual approach to rhythm.

His works include symphonies, concertos, chamber music, piano pieces and sacred music. He wrote successfully for saxophone and other instruments often underserved in the concert repertory, and his music was championed by major conductors.

Creston’s style is tonal but modern, with buoyant metres, energetic pulse and a direct expressive manner. He believed rhythm was a central organising force, not merely a surface feature.

Although his reputation receded after mid-century, his music has kept a loyal following, especially among performers who relish its drive and clarity. Creston’s best work moves with the confidence of a dancer who has counted every step and still looks spontaneous.
