Pierre Bonnet was a French Renaissance composer represented in the chanson repertory of the sixteenth century. He is one of the lesser-documented figures of the period, but his music belongs to the same cultivated world of courtly and literary song as composers such as Costeley, Le Jeune and Sermisy.

Bonnet appears in Pristine’s catalogue through the chanson Francion vint l’autre jour, included in Nadia Boulanger’s survey of French Renaissance vocal music. The work shows the movement of the polyphonic chanson toward a more melody-led courtly style.

His music, as represented there, is graceful and text-conscious, with a principal melodic line supported by relatively simple harmonic writing. It reflects a moment when Renaissance vocal polyphony was beginning to yield some of its density to direct lyrical charm.

Bonnet is not a major name in the wider Renaissance canon, but such composers help reveal the texture of a musical culture. His surviving presence is modest, yet it forms part of the living fabric of French secular song.
