Anna Moffo (1932-2006) was an American soprano, admired for the beauty of her voice, musical elegance and stage presence. Born in Pennsylvania, she studied at the Curtis Institute and in Italy before achieving international fame.

Moffo’s repertory included Mozart, bel canto, Verdi, Puccini and French opera. In the Pristine catalogue she appears in Metropolitan Opera broadcasts of Puccini’s Turandot and Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande.

Her singing combined lyric warmth, clear diction and an instinctive sense of line. She could bring glamour without losing musical shape.

Moffo’s later career was affected by vocal difficulties, but her best recordings preserve a ravishing and highly individual artist. At her finest, the voice seems to catch light before the phrase has quite begun.
