Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was a Danish composer, violinist and conductor, and one of the major symphonists of the early twentieth century. Born on Funen, he rose from modest origins to become Denmark’s most internationally recognised composer.

His works include six symphonies, concertos for violin, flute and clarinet, operas, songs, chamber music and piano pieces. The Fourth Symphony, The Inextinguishable, and the Fifth Symphony are among his central achievements.

Nielsen’s music is vigorous, individual and often driven by conflict between tonal centres. It combines folk-like directness with a powerful sense of organic struggle and renewal.

His reputation has grown steadily beyond Scandinavia. Nielsen’s best music has the feeling of life pushing through resistance: stubborn, bright and impossible to keep underground.
