Kenneth J. Alford was the pen name of Frederick Joseph Ricketts (1881-1945), a British bandmaster and composer whose marches became classics of the military and brass-band repertory. A professional soldier as well as a musician, he spent much of his career within the British Army’s musical establishment.

His most famous work is the Colonel Bogey March, composed in 1914 and later made internationally familiar through its use in The Bridge on the River Kwai. Other marches, including The Great Little Army, On the Quarter Deck and Army of the Nile, show the same sure command of stride, tune and ceremonial flair.

Alford’s marches are compact machines of energy: cleanly scored, strongly profiled and instantly memorable. They belong to a tradition in which public music, parade ground discipline and popular appeal meet without embarrassment.

Often described as the British march king, Alford gave the genre a distinctive national voice. His work remains a staple wherever bands need brilliance, buoyancy and the sort of tune that marches straight into the furniture of memory.
