Aleksandr Orlov (1889-1974) was a Russian and Soviet conductor, particularly associated with opera and broadcast performance. His name appears in the Pristine catalogue through Tchaikovsky’s The Oprichnik.

Orlov worked with Soviet musical institutions and conducted operatic repertory at a time when radio preserved many works that were otherwise little known outside Russia.

His conducting, as represented here, belongs to a practical theatre and broadcast tradition: direct, purposeful and centred on the needs of singers and dramatic pacing.

This is a selective artist note rather than a broad celebrity biography. Orlov earns his place here because the recording anchors a significant Russian operatic rarity.
