Frank Martin (1890-1974) was a Swiss composer whose music combines French colour, Germanic discipline and a deeply personal spiritual intensity. Born in Geneva, he developed a mature language that balanced tonal feeling with modern harmonic methods.

His works include the oratorio Golgotha, the Petite symphonie concertante, concertos, chamber music, choral works and operas. He also wrote music for radio and theatre.

Martin’s style is concentrated, lyrical and finely structured, often using twelve-note techniques without abandoning expressive warmth. His music can feel severe and luminous at the same time.

He remains one of Switzerland’s most significant composers. Martin’s best works have the quiet force of stained glass: colour held inside strict design.
