Carlo Maria Giulini (1914-2005) was an Italian conductor, one of the most admired musicians of the post-war era. Born in Barletta, he worked at La Scala before building an international career in opera and symphonic music.

Giulini was celebrated in Mozart, Verdi, Brahms, Bruckner and much else, and held important relationships with orchestras including the Philharmonia, Chicago Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. In the Pristine catalogue he appears in Mozart, Verdi, Dvořák, Haydn, Rossini and Tchaikovsky.

His conducting combined warmth, nobility and spiritual concentration, often favouring breadth and inner tension over surface display. He could make stillness feel charged.

Giulini’s best performances have a rare moral gravity. The music seems not conducted at, but listened into being.
