Carlos Chávez (1899-1978) was a Mexican composer, conductor and cultural organiser, and one of the most important musical figures in twentieth-century Latin America. Born in Mexico City, he became a central force in building modern Mexican musical institutions.

His works include symphonies, ballets, concertos, chamber music and choral pieces. The Sinfonía india is his best-known score, drawing on indigenous melodic material within a concise modern orchestral frame.

Chávez’s style is rhythmically strong, clear in texture and often austere, avoiding easy exoticism in favour of structural bite and national character. He absorbed international modernism while seeking a Mexican musical voice of real authority.

As conductor, teacher and administrator, Chávez shaped musical life far beyond his own compositions. His legacy is both artistic and institutional: he did not merely write music, he helped build the house it could live in.
