Albert Roussel (1869-1937) was a French composer whose music moved from impressionist colour toward a more classical and rhythmically energetic modern style. Before turning fully to music, he served as a naval officer, an experience that broadened his horizons and imagination.

His works include symphonies, ballets, chamber music, piano pieces and songs. Le festin de l’araignée, Bacchus et Ariane and the Third Symphony are among his best-known scores.

Roussel’s music is clear, vigorous and finely organised, often combining French refinement with rhythmic drive and formal strength. He had less taste for perfume than for movement and structure.

He remains a distinctive figure in French music between Debussy and later neoclassicism. Roussel’s best works move with the clipped energy of sails catching a sudden wind.
