Harald Sæverud (1897-1992), catalogued here without the Norwegian ligature, was a Norwegian composer and pianist. Born in Bergen, he became one of the most distinctive Scandinavian composers of the twentieth century.

His works include symphonies, piano music, songs and incidental music, including music for Ibsen’s Peer Gynt. He is also known for compact piano pieces from Slåtter og stev fra Siljustøl.

Sæverud’s music is often spare, rhythmically pointed and strongly individual, with roots in Norwegian folk character but without picturesque softness. It can be austere, humorous and sharply etched.

He remains an important Norwegian voice after Grieg and alongside other Nordic modern figures. His music has the feel of granite cut into quick, angular shapes.
