Agnes Giebel (1921-2017) was a German soprano, especially admired in Bach, Handel, Mozart and twentieth-century concert repertory. She built a long career in oratorio, cantata and broadcast performance rather than pursuing operatic fame above all else.

In the Pristine catalogue she appears in major mid-century recordings including Orff’s Carmina Burana under Sawallisch and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony under Horenstein.

Giebel’s singing was noted for purity, steadiness and spiritual poise, qualities that made her particularly valued in sacred and concert music. She combined clarity of line with an unfussy emotional honesty.
