Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) was an Austrian-born composer, theorist, painter and conductor, one of the defining figures of musical modernism. As an artist in the Pristine catalogue he appears conducting Mahler, a rare recorded glimpse of his activity on the podium.

Schoenberg’s historical importance rests chiefly on his composition and teaching, but his conducting preserves another part of his musical authority. He belonged to the world that knew Mahler directly and understood the late-Romantic tradition from within.
