Edward Burlingame Hill (1872-1960) was an American composer and teacher, closely associated with Harvard University. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he studied in the United States and Europe and became an important figure in American musical education.

Hill wrote orchestral works, chamber music, songs and piano pieces. His music appeared in programmes conducted by major American musicians, including Serge Koussevitzky.

His style is refined, tonal and carefully crafted, shaped by French and German influences as well as by American academic musical life. He favoured clarity and balance over dramatic novelty.

As a teacher, Hill influenced several generations of composers, including Leonard Bernstein. His own music may be little heard today, but his place in the American musical classroom was substantial.
