Michael Tippett (1905-1998) was an English composer and conductor, one of the major British musical figures of the twentieth century. Born in London, he developed a highly individual voice shaped by humanist, dramatic and spiritual concerns.

His works include the oratorio A Child of Our Time, the opera King Priam, symphonies, concertos, string quartets and piano sonatas. His music often combines classical forms with urgent modern expression.
