Dean Dixon (1915-1976) was an American conductor, one of the first Black conductors to lead major orchestras in the United States and Europe. He built an international career despite formidable racial barriers at home.

In the Pristine catalogue he appears with Antonio Janigro in Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, conducting the Vienna State Opera Orchestra.

Dixon’s importance is both musical and historical. His career helped widen the narrow doorway through which conductors were permitted to enter the orchestral establishment.

His page deserves a proper note even from a small catalogue footprint. Dixon’s baton carried musical authority and a considerable amount of door-opening force.
