Giovanni Benedetto Platti (1697-1763) was an Italian composer, oboist and instrumentalist who spent much of his career in Würzburg. Born in or near Padua, he belonged to the generation between late Baroque and early Classical styles.

Platti wrote concertos, sonatas, chamber music and vocal works, including pieces for cello and keyboard instruments. His music appears in historic violin and recital repertory through arrangements and adaptations.

His style is graceful, clear and expressive, with a strong feeling for melody and instrumental dialogue. It reflects the galant turn away from dense Baroque counterpoint toward lighter textures.

Though once obscure, Platti has attracted renewed interest from performers of eighteenth-century music. His work occupies a charming halfway house between old machinery and new sunlight.
