Mercedes Capsir (1897-1969) was a Spanish soprano, admired in coloratura and lyric repertory. Born in Barcelona, she made an important career in Italy and Spain during the early decades of the twentieth century.

In the Pristine catalogue she appears in early complete recordings of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Verdi’s Rigoletto with Riccardo Stracciari and Lorenzo Molajoli.

Capsir’s singing was agile, bright and theatrical, well suited to roles requiring sparkle, charm and precise vocal articulation. Her recordings preserve a lighter Italianate style from the 78 rpm era.

Her page is justified by repeated appearances in historically important opera sets. Capsir brings the silver thread through some of Pristine’s early Italian opera fabric.
