Yevgeny Mravinsky (1903-1988) was a Russian conductor, long associated with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. He became one of the most commanding orchestral figures of the Soviet era.

Mravinsky was closely linked with Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky, and gave several important premières. In the Pristine catalogue he appears in Tchaikovsky and other Russian repertory, preserving the severe discipline and intensity of his orchestral world.

His conducting was taut, austere and electrifying, with razor-edged ensemble and a powerful sense of architecture. He could make silence feel as dangerous as a climax.

Mravinsky remains a conductor of almost granite authority. His performances do not invite; they command the room to stand straighter.
