Robert Volkmann (1815-1883) was a German composer whose music belongs to the Romantic generation between Schumann, Mendelssohn and Brahms. Born in Saxony, he spent much of his career in Budapest.

His works include symphonies, overtures, chamber music, piano pieces and songs. His Serenade for strings appears in historic orchestral repertory through short movements and arrangements.

Volkmann’s music is well-crafted, lyrical and structurally clear, with a warm Romantic idiom and a strong sense of instrumental balance. It avoids extremes while offering solid musical substance.

Though his reputation is now modest, Volkmann was respected in his own time. His music is a reminder that the Romantic landscape had many well-built houses beyond the famous mansions.
