Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) was a French composer whose name is inseparable from the theatrical life of nineteenth-century Paris. Trained at the Paris Conservatoire, he inherited a gift for melody from the world of opéra comique and wrote with a fluency that made him one of the most successful stage composers of his generation.
