Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) was a French composer whose name is inseparable from the theatrical life of nineteenth-century Paris. Trained at the Paris Conservatoire, he inherited a gift for melody from the world of opéra comique and wrote with a fluency that made him one of the most successful stage composers of his generation.

His best-known scores are the ballet Giselle, one of the enduring monuments of Romantic ballet, and the opera Le postillon de Lonjumeau. He also wrote Le corsaire, numerous other stage works, and the music for the Christmas song Minuit, chrétiens, known in English as O Holy Night.

Adam’s music is marked by elegance, clarity and theatrical instinct rather than symphonic weight. He had an acute sense of scene, gesture and vocal line, allowing his work to move easily between charm, sentiment and dramatic sparkle.

Although later overshadowed by larger operatic names, Adam remains a central figure in French stage music. His influence survives most vividly in the ballet repertory, where Giselle continues to speak with a directness and grace that have barely aged.
