Lydia Kindermann (1892-1953) was a Polish-born contralto, active in opera and concert repertory. She sang internationally and became associated with German and central European repertory.

In the Pristine catalogue she appears in Toscanini’s 1941 Beethoven Ninth from Buenos Aires, with Alexander Kipnis, Judith Hellwig and René Maison.

Kindermann’s singing brought the dark lower-voice colour required by Beethoven’s choral finale, where authority and warmth must arrive together.
