Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940) was a Mexican composer, violinist and conductor, one of the most vivid musical voices of twentieth-century Latin America. Born in Santiago Papasquiaro, he studied in Mexico and the United States.

His works include orchestral pieces, chamber music, songs and film scores. Sensemayá, Redes and La noche de los mayas are among his best-known scores.

Revueltas’s music is rhythmically fierce, colourfully scored and often sharply satirical, drawing on Mexican musical life without smoothing away its edge. It can sound festive and dangerous at once.

His life was short and turbulent, but his voice is unmistakable. Revueltas made modernism feel dusty, sunlit, political and very much alive.
