J. Walter Kramer is represented in the Pristine catalogue by the song Now like a lantern, recorded by Kirsten Flagstad in 1952. The catalogue identifies him through that song rather than through a large familiar body of concert music.

The piece belongs to the mid-century American song repertory that Flagstad included alongside Schubert, Brahms and Richard Strauss. Its presence there suggests a composer working within the cultivated recital tradition.

Kramer’s music, as represented here, is best understood through the voice: concise, lyrical and shaped for clear communication of text. It stands in the intimate world of art song rather than the public world of symphony or opera.

Because the catalogue evidence is limited, this entry is deliberately cautious. Kramer is preserved here as a song composer attached to a significant historic recording, a small lamp in a distinguished recital room.
