Johan Svendsen (1840-1911) was a Norwegian composer, violinist and conductor, and one of the major Scandinavian orchestral figures of the nineteenth century. Born in Christiania, now Oslo, he studied in Leipzig and later worked in Copenhagen.

His works include symphonies, Norwegian rhapsodies, chamber music, the Romance for violin and orchestra, and other orchestral pieces. He was admired for his orchestral fluency and command of form.

Svendsen’s music is Romantic, colourful and well-built, combining Nordic character with strong Central European training. It often favours broad melody and clear orchestral profile.

Though Grieg’s fame has overshadowed him internationally, Svendsen remains an important Norwegian composer. His best music has the sweep of a wide fjord seen in clean weather.
