Honegger
Arthur Honegger (1892-1955) was a Swiss-born composer active mainly in France, and a member of the group known as Les Six. Born in Le Havre to Swiss parents, he combined French clarity with a more Germanic taste for structure and weight.
His works include symphonies, oratorios, chamber music, film scores, ballets and operas. Pacific 231, King David and the dramatic oratorio Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher are among his most famous scores.
Honegger’s music is energetic, serious and often powerfully dramatic, with strong rhythms and dense contrapuntal writing. He was less frivolous than the public image of Les Six sometimes suggests.
His finest works bring together modern drive and spiritual gravity. Honegger’s music can sound like machinery, prophecy and theatre all pulling on the same rope.
