Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871-1942) was an Austrian composer, conductor and teacher. As an artist in the Pristine catalogue he is represented by his complete commercial recordings from 1927-34.

Zemlinsky conducted in Vienna, Prague and Berlin, and was deeply connected with the musical world of Mahler, Schoenberg, Korngold and the early twentieth-century theatre. His recordings preserve a conductor-composer at work in repertory ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to Smetana and Weinberger.

His conducting legacy is necessarily limited, but historically valuable. It gives recorded evidence of a musician whose wider importance as composer and teacher has grown steadily.

This artist page therefore complements his composer identity. Zemlinsky here is not only a name in the score catalogue, but a surviving musical intelligence at the podium.
