Christian Sinding (1856-1941) was a Norwegian composer whose music belongs to the late Romantic generation after Grieg. Born in Kongsberg, he studied in Leipzig and spent much of his career between Norway and Germany.

His works include symphonies, concertos, chamber music, songs and many piano pieces. Frühlingsrauschen, or Rustle of Spring, became his most famous work.

Sinding’s music is lyrical, warmly Romantic and often pianistically effective, with German craft and Norwegian colour meeting in a fluent style. He favoured expressive directness over radical experiment.

His later reputation was damaged by political associations near the end of his life, but his earlier music remains part of the Nordic Romantic story. Sinding’s best-known pieces still carry a fresh gust of spring air.
