Louis Spohr (1784-1859) was a German composer, violinist and conductor, one of the most respected musicians of the early Romantic period. Born in Braunschweig, he built a distinguished career as a virtuoso and Kapellmeister.

His works include violin concertos, symphonies, operas, chamber music, songs and oratorios. He was especially important in violin repertory and in the development of conducting practice.

Spohr’s music is elegant, lyrical and classically balanced, standing between Mozart and the fuller Romantic idiom. His violin writing reflects a performer’s knowledge of line and technique.

Though his fame faded after his death, Spohr was a major figure in his own time. His music occupies the polished corridor between Classical poise and Romantic warmth.
