Hendrik Andriessen (1892-1981) was a Dutch composer, organist and teacher, and a central figure in twentieth-century musical life in the Netherlands. Born in Haarlem, he was closely associated with Catholic church music and with a broader Dutch tradition of organ and choral composition.

Andriessen’s output includes masses, motets, songs, organ works, chamber music and orchestral pieces. His sacred music in particular brought together liturgical purpose and refined craft, giving Dutch church music a modern but deeply rooted voice.

His style is clear, disciplined and lyrical, often combining modal inflections with a restrained modern harmonic language. Rather than seeking shock, Andriessen favoured poise, concentration and expressive directness.

He was also an influential teacher and administrator, serving at major Dutch musical institutions and shaping younger generations of musicians. His legacy continued through his musical family, but his own work remains an important strand in the Netherlands’ twentieth-century repertory.
