Marcel Mihalovici (1898-1985) was a Romanian-born French composer. Born in Bucharest, he studied in Paris and became part of the city’s rich twentieth-century musical life.

His works include symphonies, concertos, chamber music, piano pieces and operas. He was associated with major performers and conductors, and his music appears in Pristine’s catalogue through Jascha Horenstein’s advocacy.

Mihalovici’s style is modern, tightly constructed and expressive, drawing on French clarity and central European seriousness. It avoids easy display in favour of concentrated musical argument.

Though now a specialist name, he belongs to the cosmopolitan Parisian world that drew composers from across Europe. His music has the firm grain of a craftsman who knew exactly how dense a texture could be.
