Edmund Rubbra (1901-1986) was an English composer, pianist and teacher, known especially for his symphonies and chamber music. Born in Northampton, he studied with Gustav Holst and R. O. Morris.

His works include eleven symphonies, concertos, string quartets, choral works, songs and piano music. He also wrote a violin sonata associated with Albert Sammons in the Pristine catalogue.

Rubbra’s music is serious, contrapuntal and spiritually inward, with a strong sense of long-range growth. It resists easy display and often unfolds with quiet inevitability.

Though never a populist figure, Rubbra occupies an important place in twentieth-century British music. His best works have the steady glow of thought held patiently in sound.
