Deems Taylor (1885-1966) was an American composer, critic and broadcaster. He became one of the best-known musical commentators in the United States, while also maintaining a career as a composer.

His works include operas, orchestral pieces, songs and choral music. In the Pristine catalogue he is represented by the song A song for lovers, recorded by Kirsten Flagstad in 1952.

Taylor’s music is lyrical, accessible and shaped by the cultivated American concert style of the early twentieth century. His songs are written for direct communication rather than experimental display.

He is remembered as much for explaining music as for composing it, especially through radio and film. Taylor’s legacy sits comfortably between the score, the microphone and the listener’s armchair.
