Luigi Denza (1846-1922) was an Italian composer, singer and teacher, best remembered for one spectacularly durable song. Born near Naples, he became associated with the Neapolitan song tradition and later worked in London.

His most famous work is Funiculì, Funiculà, written in 1880 with words by Peppino Turco to mark the opening of the funicular railway on Mount Vesuvius. The song rapidly became internationally famous.

Denza wrote many songs, most of them shaped by clear melody, lively rhythm and immediate vocal appeal. His music belongs to the bustling border between popular song, salon performance and classical recital culture.

Though one tune has naturally eclipsed the rest, Denza’s place is secure wherever Italian song is loved. He proved that a railway jingle, handled by the right melodic hand, can climb all the way into immortality.
